In Healthy Lifestyles, there is a strong focus on what it means to lead a healthy life. Students not only develop an understanding of their own health and wellbeing but also of the health of the wider school community. This learning area emphasises the significance of being physically active while also exploring what it means to be healthy and how to make healthy choices.
Students in Years 7 & 8 participate in theory lessons where they analyse the impact of changes and transitions. They plan and implement strategies to enhance their own and others’ health, safety, relationships and wellbeing. Additionally, they examine the roles of respect, empathy, power and coercion in building respectful relationships.
In practical classes, students explore movement through a range of contexts, including dance and games, while developing sport-specific skills and engaging in physical activities aimed at improving fitness. They investigate the benefits of regular participation on health and wellbeing, design plans to increase physical activity levels, and analyse how modifications to equipment, rules and scoring systems can promote fair play and inclusive participation.
Students study at least one specialism from the Healthy Lifestyles learning area in both Years 9 & 10.
