Languages

As part of the Languages Program, students have the option to study French or Japanese, providing access to both European and Asian languages. Students learn these languages through key cultural themes such as school, travel, environment, family and food, with a strong focus on the use of ICT in their studies.

Students who wish to study another language can do so through the Victorian School of Languages.

Year 7 & 8

All students will study a semester of French and a semester of Japanese in Year 7. They will then choose one language to study in Year 8.

Year 9 & 10

It is anticipated that students choosing French or Japanese in Year 9 and 10 have previous studies (in the same language) in the preceding year. Languages are year-long specialisms.

Co-curricular

Students are encouraged to attend our Japanese/French Exchange Program, Japanese Club, Lunchtime Learning Club, VCE Study Groups and Home Learning Support.

French & Japanese Exchange Program

In June 2023, we welcomed our first exchange students from France to the college, and our Year 11 French students went to France in December 2023! They soaked up every moment of this incredible journey – from the iconic Eiffel Tower to a picturesque Seine River cruise, Canal Saint-Martin and exploring the Paris Christmas windows and market. They have conquered the Arc de Triomphe, savoured escargot, strolled along the Seine and discovered the treasures of Musée d'Orsay!

I think the best thing to come out of the exchange was how my French improved. Being constantly immersed in the language and talking with my French exchange student helped me to improve my speaking and listening skills significantly. It’s really cool to know that I now have a lifelong friend on the other side of the world, and it was certainly an experience that I'll never forget.
