Mathematics

Mathematics is at the core of all our learning areas. Students develop their mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, modelling and problem solving to develop numeracy skills for everyday life.

Year 7 & 8

Year 7 & 8 Mathematics enables students to expand their understanding in various areas of mathematics and formalises their methods of mathematical communication. The course aligns with the Victorian Curriculum across the content strands of Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability. Additionally, there is a focus on the proficiency strands of Fluency, Understanding, Problem-Solving, and Reasoning.

Year 9

In Year 9, students are required to study Core Maths in both Semester 1 and Semester 2. Students may also choose to study 'An Introduction to Differential Calculus (Year 9 only)' as an additional Mathematics specialism.

Year 10

In Year 10, students must choose one of the following two options for Mathematics:

  • Year 10 Core Maths (2 semesters)
  • Year 10 Maths Pathways (2 semesters)

While the majority of students are expected to undertake Year 10 Core Maths, those interested in exploring Year 10 Maths Pathways must discuss the possibility with both their GOAL mentor and their current Maths teacher. Additionally, students considering studying Specialist and Methods in Year 11 are encouraged to choose the 'Introduction to Integral Calculus specialism (1 semester)'—Differential Calculus serves as a prerequisite.

Students may also opt to study 'An Introduction to Integral Calculus (Year 10 only)' as an additional Mathematics specialism.

VCE

In Years 11 and 12, students undertake the VCE Mathematics course where they have the option to choose from Foundation Mathematics, General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, and Specialist Mathematics.

Co-curricular

Students are encouraged to attend Maths Club, Lunchtime Learning ClubVCE Study Groups and Home Learning Support.

Mathematics is the first form of art, it sits at the basis of everything that we use across all areas of our life. Ultimately, it is at the core of what you need for our world, healthy lifestyles, to innovate, to create and to communicate. Our students understand that Mathematics is about having a branding that can be applied across a variety of learning areas.
